Dr. Charles Smith, folk artist near Kentwood, Louisiana. This is the first artwork he created, in which he "fixed his Mama's white Jesus.".
As a part of Beneath A Paper Moon's nationwide study of American storytelling, this image accompanies writing about myth-making, religion and monsters. Specifically, this section of the project considers the Rougarou, a uniquely American swamp-dwelling monster born out of the convergences of desire, guilt, religion, and a legacy of colonialism.
